Here are my recommendations for where to stay in Italy on your next visit.

Types of accommodations in Italy

When looking at where to stay in Italy, hostels and hotels are the most popular accommodation options that can be found in most major cities and tourist destinations. If you prefer a more intimate experience, you can opt for a Bed and Breakfast (B&B) or a vacation rental like Airbnb.

You might even find lodgings in some convents and monasteries across Italy. For a more authentic experience, consider farm stays in rural areas or historic apartments in city centers.

Agriturismos

An agriturismo is similar to a farm stay, where you can experience rural life while staying on a working farm. This is a great opition to explore when you’re planning on where to stay in Italy. Many agriturismos often serve traditional, home-cooked meals made with produce from the farm. They are also eco-friendly, as many agriturismos use sustainable practices and promote environmental conservation.

Agriturismos can be found throughout Italy and vary in size and amenities. They are a great way to experience the authentic Italian countryside and learn about local food and wine. Some are small family-run operations, while others are larger and more luxurious.

They often offer traditional accommodations such as farmhouses, cottages and apartments. During your stay, you can sometimes participate in farm activities such as milking cows, feeding animals, and picking fruits and vegetables. Some agriturismos also offer cooking classes, guided tours and workshops on traditional crafts.

Masserias

A Masseria is a type of farmhouse or manor house found in the southern region of Italy, particularly in Puglia. The name “Masseria” comes from the Latin word “mansionaria,” meaning living quarters for farm workers. Masserias were traditionally used for both agricultural production and residence for the owner and the family. They were often fortified and had a central courtyard surrounded by rooms for the family and rooms for the workers.

Many have been restored and transformed into luxury accommodations like hotels, restaurants and vacation rentals. They offer a unique opportunity to experience the traditional southern Italian rural lifestyle and architecture while providing modern amenities and comfort.

Many are located in the countryside, often surrounded by olive groves, vineyards and orchards, making them an ideal place for those seeking a peaceful and quiet stay. We stayed at an olive farm in Puglia and can attest that it’s an incredible experience.

Alberghi diffusi

All these cities are great starting points for exploring Italy and offer many attractions you can visit. They are also great as a base for day trips and tours.

Popular tourist cities are a great introduction to Italy and all it has to offer. I always recommend staying close to the major attraction, especially on your first visit. You want to cover as much as possible during your stay, and you don’t want to waste your time commuting. Big cities are popular for a reason, and they have infrastructure in place that makes it easier for tourists to get around.

Tips for where to stay in Italy on your next trip

Deciding where to stay in Italy will depend on what you want to see and do. No matter where you stay – big cities, smaller towns or the countryside – plan your accomodations in advance. Here is my biggest advice. Summer months tend to get hot, so make sure your accomodations have air conditioning. If in doubt, message them directly to confirm. We ened up in an Airbnb once that listed AC but had fans instead. It wasn’t great.

If you’re travelling during winter months, make sure your accomodations have heating. Italy has a lot of homes that are build with concrete and predate indoor heating. When it gets cold and damp, the inside can feel colder than the outside, which can be unpleasant. You won’t likely encounter this issue in a hotel, but if you’re looking at staying at home stays, Airbnbs or similar, it’s better to make sure ahead of your visit.
