When it comes to experiencing the heart and soul of Italian cuisine, I’d argue there’s no better place than Naples. Known as the birthplace of pizza and a haven for food lovers, Naples is packed with flavours and offers an unforgettable gastronomic journey. Even Stanley Tucci came here for the food, so that’s gotta mean something.
Recently, we had the pleasure of taking the Ultimate Naples Food Tour with Devour Tours, an experience that left us both satisfied and craving more. If you’ve wondered if you should do a food tour in Naples, then this post is for you.

Naples food tour overview
Our culinary adventure began in Piazza Dante, the bustling heart of Naples. The group was small, making our experience more fun and engaging. Our guide, Sonia, was knowledgeable. Being a local, she took us to places we didn’t even know about despite coming to Naples almost monthly. This shows you that a local will always have a better insight into the local food scene than a visitor, and we were here for it.

Our first stop was traditional coffee at the Neapolitan staple, Mexico Dante 1963. This family-owned coffee joint has been around for decades and roasts its coffee, which is known all over Italy and beyond. We visited the coffee shop between the waves of locals stopping for their morning caffeine hit, and it’s easy to see why. This is home to Passalacqua coffee, a brand we drink at home and had no idea came from here. That’s another great reason why taking a food tour is a great place to learn about the local culture—you actually go to the source.
The next stop was another family-owned pastry shop, where we tried another Neopolitan fave—a fresh sfogliatella. We learned the difference between riccia (crunchy version filled with ricotta cheese) and frolla, a softer version that’s not as crunchy. Fun fact: it was created for people who were missing teeth or couldn’t eat the harder, crunchy version. How is that for history?
No Naples food tour is complete without a visit to the local markets. We wandered through the vibrant Pignasecca market, the oldest market in Naples. The market is open every day except for Sunday. Here, you can grab fresh fruit and vegetables and marvel at the trays of different fish and seafood. It’s definitely a visual and olfactory experience for the senses.
Near the market, you can grab another local staple—a cup of fried seafood. Called cuoppo di mare, it’s a mix of fried calamari, shrimp, and fish served in a paper cone with a lemon wedge. If seafood is not your thing, you can enjoy other savoury treats.
If you’re wondering what else you can sample on your Naples food tour, you’re probably not thinking of the obvious. Yes, I’m talking about tomatoes, and let me tell you, it’s an experience. Unlike in Canada, the tomatoes have flavours and smells that are simply delightful. We tried six different types of tomatoes and learned what type is used for what dish. If you think a tomato is just a tomato, prepare to be surprised.
The Campania region is known for its cheese, specifically mozzarella di buffala. We also got to taste the firmer fior di latte and smoked provola. If you’ve ever had any of them, you’ll know that iconic flavour and consistency are a treat to your tastebuds. These milky cheeses are even more delightful on a pizza. If you want to elevate your pizza, order the Bufalina, which is like the famous Margherita but with mozzarella di buffala cheese. You can thank us later.
Our next stop was pizza. You can’t have a food tour in Naples without pizza, and this one was a tasty cherry on top. Naples is renowned for its Neapolitan pizza, and our guide took us to a local pizzeria that has been perfecting the craft for generations. And the taste? Simply out of this world. The soft, chewy crust, tangy tomato sauce and creamy mozzarella felt like heaven.
What’s better than pizza? Two pizzas. We also tried a fried version of the pie similar to a calzone. You can stuff your fried pizza with similar toppings or go for the staple of tomatoes and cheese. Whichever pizza style you prefer, it tastes different in Naples.
